Introduction
Daniel's a recent arrival to the Commonwealth. Having left his home 10 years prior due to circumstances he's reluctant to share, he's trying his luck as a scavenger.
Aware that traveling alone in the wastes is asking for trouble, he offers the player a deal - he'll watch the player's back, so long as the player helps him with his scavenging.
However, as you travel together, you'll learn more about Daniel's storied history, and help him face a fragment of his past life as you journey back to his home.

Quests
Systems
The following is a description of how all of Daniel's various systems function.
Trust & Affinity
Daniel's trust in the player will increase the longer you travel together. Generally speaking, this is calculated by how much XP the player earns while Daniel is following them:
- The system checks Daniel's current Trust level every 10 real-time minutes
- If the player has earned 750 or more XP since the last Trust check, Daniel's trust increases by 1
- As Daniel's Trust increases, you'll unlock new Affinity Conversations with him
- Daniel will mention he wants to talk to you when a new Affinity Conversation has been unlocked - you'll also see that the usual "Thoughts?" dialogue option will be replaced with a different option
| Affinity Conversation | Unlock Requirements |
|---|---|
| 00 | Daniel's Trust is at least 1. |
| 01 | Daniel has been to a Brotherhood of Steel location (Cambridge PD or Boston Airport after Reunions). |
| 02 | Daniel's Trust is at least 3. |
| 03 | Daniel's Trust is at least 4. |
| 04 | After Daniel has acquired his Pip-Boy, he will listen to a holotape when you are loitering in a Town or Settlement. After you overhear the holotape, this Affinity Conversation unlocks. |
| 05 | Daniel's Trust is at least 5. |
| 06 | Daniel's final quest has been completed. |
Tactics
Daniel's follow behaviour can be customized in the form of Tactics, accessible through dialogue with him. Two aspects of his behaviour can be customized: Follow Distance & Combat Stance.
Follow Distance
- By default, Daniel will follow the player at a Medium distance which the game considers to be between 300 to 600 units from the player
-
Daniel can be changed to follow:
- Close - Following between 150 to 300 units
- Far - Following between 600 to 1000 units
Combat Stance
- By default, Daniel is set to have an Aggressive combat stance, which means he'll open fire on any hostiles as soon as he sees them
-
Daniel can be changed to the following stances:
- Defensive - attack only when he or the player are being attacked
- Hold Fire - attack only when the player has started shooting, even if he is currently being attacked
Hacking & Lockpicking
When Daniel first starts following you, he doesn't know how to Hack or Lockpick. If you command him to try, he'll decline. However, you are given the option to help him learn.
After Daniel has commented on you Hacking twice and Lockpicking twice, the next time you talk he'll ask if he can borrow any Total Hack or Tumblers Today magazines so he can start learning how to hack and lockpick. The system works as such:
- In Dialogue, the "Give Magazine" option will be visible if you have a valid Magazine to give Daniel (You may have to select the "More" dialogue option)
- When you select "Give Magazine", a menu will show up showing any valid Magazines you have to give Daniel
- When you give Daniel a Magazine, it'll be removed from your inventory
- Daniel will keep the Magazine for 24 hours
- After 24 hours, when you next speak to Daniel, he will give back the Magazine and his related skill will increase
- You can only give Daniel one Magazine at a time, and you cannot give him the same Magazine more than once
| Tumblers Today Given | Lockpick Ability Gained |
|---|---|
| 1 | Novice lockpicking. |
| 2 | Advanced lockpicking. |
| 3 | Expert lockpicking. |
| 4 | Master lockpicking. |
| Total Hacks Given | Lockpick Ability Gained |
|---|---|
| 1 | Novice hacking. |
| 2 | Advanced hacking. |
| 3 | Expert & Master hacking. |
Dismissal & Changing Home
Daniel can be dismissed to Settlements like regular followers, however he can also be dismissed to non-settlement locations that are set as his Home.
By default, Daniel's Home is the Dugout Inn in Diamond City, however the player can change this at any time via Dialogue with Daniel. To do so:
- In Dialogue, select the "Change home" option (Not available if Daniel is currently in Power Armor. You may have to select the "More" dialogue option to see it)
- The system will check if the current location is suitable as a home
- If it is suitable, you can confirm if you want Daniel to consider this location home, or you can cancel
When Dismissing Daniel, you'll have the choice of dismissing him to a Settlement (showing the usual Settlement menu) or his Home.
For a location to be suitable, it must:
- Not be a dungeon
- Have a bed
- Have a "location center marker" (most locations have one)
Vertibird Fast Travel
A few days after completing Daniel's final quest, he'll give you signal flares (Daniel's Signal Flare) which you can throw to have Daniel arrive in his Vertibird to fly you somewhere.
Daniel will give you more flares after a few days if you start running low on them. To make use of Daniel's Vertibird:
- Daniel must not be following the player, and he must not be close to the player
- If he is close by, he'll state he isn't close to his Vertibird and cannot help you
- Throw the signal flare
- If there's space, Daniel will fly in with his Vertibird
- Board the Vertibird and select a location to fly to via your Pip-Boy
- Daniel will bring you to your selected location
After Daniel has transported you, he needs at least one hour to refuel his Vertibird before it becomes available again.
